Hidden Christian Chapel キリシタン洞窟礼拝堂
Christianity was tolerated in Taketa until 1612, when it was forbidden by the Tokugawa dynasty. Three Christians were executed in Taketa so during this period Christians had to practise their religion in secret.
Their small chapel, the size of 6 tatami mats, was hidden within a bamboo thicket quite close to the Samurai quarter. From about 1617, an Italian priest, Francisco Boldrino continued his secret missionary work with the help of a senior Oka administrator, Shigeji Furuta.
